Those darn Zeniths
I discovered that the the bi-metal choke spring on the rear carb is broken. I have replaced it with a spring from an older carb set. The older spring actually looks a little thinner and had a marking ont he cover of 18 as opposed to 24 on the broken one.
I also noticed that in order for the spring to close the choke flap cold I have to turn the cover around counter clockwise 360 degrees .. is this correct? Is it possible to get replacement springs? I'm planning on rebuilding these carbs but I do have a complete list of what comes in the full kit. TIA Adrian |
You get a bunch of gaskets, new idle adjust screw, new inlet valve, new accelerator pump, lots of o-rings. A lot of the stuff is for the secondary vacuum assembly. You do get manifold gaskets.
It looks more impressive than it really is because there are several types of Zeniths and they sell a universal kit. Chances are, all you will use are the gaskets and o-rings for the fuel block. Don't mess with what works! BTW - if your heat risers are not working, make sure they are stuck in the closed - hot position. If they stick in the open - cold position, the heat from the exhaust manifold will warp the carbs if it hasn't already. I have lots of parts if you need them. |

So how would I test for warpage.. take them off the manifold and try to sit them on a flat surface.. use a straight edge and feeler gauges? I found a place in LA that will R&R each for $90 but I imagine they will not beable to anything about the broken choke spring or warpage if there is any. |
You test for warpage like dantrcav said. Mostly it is the top plate. Tape a sheet of 1200 grit wet/dry to a very flat surface like a piece of glass, and rub the top plate across it. If you see areas that are not "abraded," keep going until the entire surface is smooth and shows signs of sanding.
There are a ton of posts on this subject on this forum, and I have a good article I can snail mail if it would help. |
Ooops.. okay so it is reapairable?
I would like to se this article.. I\ll send you my address.. Thanks Adrian |
