W114 Panel lights

I have a 75 280C, the lights in the control panel+instrument panel do not work, it used to work some times but now it just do not work. I checked all fuses they are ok. Any clues?

Thanks,
Francisco.

If you pull the top part of the instrument cluster forward you will see two green wires that connect near the top right backside. If those are loose then they could be the reason.

On W114/115 cars it's common for the dimmer control on the back of the instruent cluster to get corroded. It's possible to remove, dissassemble and clean it (what I usually do) or install a replacement.

A new but very much related question:

What kind of bulb are we supposed to use to make the gauges actually bright enough to read? I bought some that "looked" right, but the packages never list the wattages and the one I bought is too dull. I then ordered some from a MB parts shop, but they were completely the wrong ones (the ones they send me were teeny tiny bulbs that don't go anywhere in my car!). Can anyone recommend an exact bulb number (besides an MB part number, of course -- I don't have $20.00 to spend on each bulb!!).

If you're sure that your dimmer control is giving full power to your dash lights, when you unscrew the bulb sockets from the back of the instrument cluster, they should accept a standard push-in bulb, availible from any auto parts store. I believe #158 bulb is usually used in dash lighting. I checked my spare W114 instrument cluster and it still has the original bulbs which are marked
OSRAM (maker) 12V (volts) 3W (watts) in case you need to compare specs on replacement bulbs.
(There are brighter bulbs that will fit the instrument sockets but they're usually used for exterior side-marker and parking light applications and may get too hot for use in the instrument cluster.)

There's a place that sells upgrade kits for brighter dashlights and interior lights on 114/115/108.... www.**************.com
