ON any car with complete computer controls a SCANNER is needed to find the problem!
I POSTED! "MOST likely! some liquid has been spilled on the gear shifter!
IT is a computer & computers don't like liquids!"
That doesn't mean that you should replace ANY part including the shifter or brake lamp switch until those systems are scanned for codes! I didn't IMPLY that you should go out & buy a new shifter W/O having the problem diagnosed by a MB expert!
I alway suggest that the problem is diagnosed PROPERLY.
