You should have just replaced the block and head and manifolds and left everything else the same. Yes the 86 is lower compression but everything else would have been fine. You should have kept the ECU and wiring and sensors you had, the same AFM and Dizzy as well. If you have the 1987 ignition controller and the 1986 dizzy that could be the main issue.
