To set the record straight, AMG had nothing to do with the regular production run of 500E/E500 models manufactured from 1990 till January of 1995. This was a Mercedes-Porsche collaboration from beginning to end.
As aftermarket tuners, AMG did a very few (about twelve as far as I can tell) E60 conversions to stock 94 E500's. According to an owner in California, this conversion was apparently available through MB by special order, indicating that AMG was actively developing their ties with the factory. This led to the the C36 AMG, which was the FIRST factory approved AMG series-production project.
