I would think that before doing a valve job, a compression check would narrow down this possibility. If the compression check indicates no problem, then the intake valve seal on this cylinder would be a much cheaper suspect.

The only thing a compression test will show is piston, bore, and valve "seat" condition. A compression test will tell you absolutely nothing about valve guide condition. The guide is on the wrong side of the combustion chamber. Remember that these cars will run fairly clean while using a lot of oil. If it's getting enough oil to leave heavy deposits on the plug, something is very wrong.
