I agree with Kerry on the clutch. If the clutch is frozen and the fan is turning at full lockup speed, the sound is exactly like what you describe............a roar coming from the front of the vehicle.

Spin the fan, by hand, when cold. It should be relatively easy to turn but probably won't spin on it's own. If it's hard to turn.........that's your problem.
