Spin the fan, by hand, when cold. It should be relatively easy to turn but probably won't spin on it's own. If it's hard to turn.........that's your problem.
Hmm. I'm glad you mentioned that. I'm tracking down a similar sound and it reminded me that I tried to turn the fan the last time I was poking around with the engine cold and I was suprised at how hard it was to turn. I didn't think much of it but now I'm going to give it a closer look.
