He's pulling your leg on the 12mpg.

I've never had a 300D, my 190DT does 35hwy/28city, benefit of a 300lb lighter car and 2.65:1 gears. I'm guessing that the '82 300D should do high 20s to maybe 31mpg on the road depending on the condition of the car, winter or summer fuel, and the weight of your right foot, cripes my '92 4matic gas did that well.

Prices are all over the place, $1500 is high for a tired one because fixing one can cost more than it's worth, for a nice one however, not bad.
