He's right, the cabin air comes in through the airbox located under the hood in front of the passenger seat. If you have any smells coming in through the vents, I would check the hood vents and look around under the hood where you'll see a "black box" that has the incoming air door and filter in it.
You might also consider replacing the cabin air filters since the activated charcoal filter is apparently designed to neutralize odors from outside.
