That's what the gauge is for. If you notice the oil pressure dropping and you pull the vehicle off the road immediately, no damage is done.
My SDL started dropping pressure at highway speeds due to oil consumption. I noticed it immediately after it fell off the peg at 3.0. I had it over on the side of the road and it never dropped below 2.0 until it came down to idle.
No damage was done to the engine

The mechanic is probably referring to the fact that most of the time when people notice the oil pressure gauge..........
