Excellent point Larry. HP being a ‘work over time’ function. Work being the Torque delivered at any given RPM, and RPM being the 'time' function.
There is an old saying that “people *buy* horsepower, but they actually *want* torque”. This is especially true in U.S. driving conditions, where brute force acceleration is more of a selling point versus high velocity Autobahn burning.
As an additional question, does anyone know what was done to the 1985 engines that increased the rated power output? Specifically, were there any mechanical alterations such as valve sizing or cam profile changes? I hypothesize/suspect that perhaps the only difference is that the trap oxidizer allowed the IP to be calibrated a bit richer without producing too much soot from the tailpipe. If anyone has the definite answer, please post!
Thanks
