It is obviously not absolutely necessary. But a significant number of diesel vehicles
do come with factory installed water separators. And since I don't have a lot of control over the quality of the fuel that goes in my tank, I think that $40 is a good value for the insurance that the FM 10 (or similar filter) will provide.
But I will be interested to see if I ever get any water out of the sump. Maybe it is a "feel good" upgrade. But I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
