Even out in Cali "Beach Rust" can be a problem.... not so much in SoCal, but more so in the northern coastal areas of the state... I'd say roughly from the Monterey Bay on up northwards. Older cars suffer the most naturaly. Moist thick coastal fog blankets the northern edge of the state every evening for much of the year, which causes surface rust and extreme oxidation of paint. Most cars susceptible to rust are cars that have exposed sheet metal from scratches, and fender benders. The undersides of cars also collect surface rust. But this is really only seen on Northern California cars that live right on the coast, that arent garaged or washed regularly. "Beach" cars. The problem never really goes deeper than surface rust though.

Then we have cars that live in the Sierra's.... which recieve snow annually. Roads are salted, and naturally you get rust. But again, the rust never goes deeper than surface rust on most cars, unless they are relatively old and have been exposed to salt anually for their whole life.
