If it didn't start doing this until AFTER you adjusted the valves, you need to recheck them. I wouldn't drive it much until the lash is rechecked and the jam-nuts checked that they are tight.

Whitish/grey smoke can be from incomplete combustion due to low compression (The air does not get hot enough to ignite all the fuel).
