85 Sl

Austin,

I have a 85 Sl. Some of the things to consider is the timing chain. Has it been replaced? If not it is probably due. Another thing to listen for is valve train noise. Lifter tap. If it has a noise on one or more lifters it could be more than you bargined for. I have my 85 tore down not for a flat camshaft cyl. #7. Check the maintance records to see what work has been done and also check the cost of replacing the time chain and associated parts. I do all my own work and just purchased parts today at the tune of 460.00 which included a new camshaft, rockers etc. through a mercedes parts outlet. If you do hear tapping noises do not purchase until you have it checked out. If you do not do your own work it could be expensive to repair. Haven't had a lot of problems although over the years but, in my opinion the 380 is a gutless wonder. I would look at a 560 depending on your budget.

My 85 has 217,000 miles on it at this time. (wife's car)

Hope this helps and good luck
