Mosy likely the tailgate has been slamed down by someone or people who don't reaalize it has automatic pull down to latch. The loop in the body is secured very well. I'd bet on the tailgate hook being moved slightly.

Loosen the bolts securing the hook in the gate. Make them firm, but not tight. A little trial & error till it operates correctly. Then tighten bolts.
