On a 4 speed tranny the counter shaft is in constant engagement with the input shaft which only turns when the engine is on and clutch is released. The counter shaft is what sits in oil and slings it around. In neutral on a tow dolly I would disconnect the driveshaft for a long tow because the bearing between the output shaft and the main shaft would have no way of getting oil.
