Had taken my 98 E300 into a local Meineke about a year ago with the same problem. The owner there said that the way the rear muffler on a W210 is hung on one side puts too much twisting stress on the weld and the inlet pipe.
He sees them all the time with the inlet of the muffler cracked or broken completely off. He charged me $230 to fabricate a new inlet flange and weld a piece of angled metal between the back of the muffler and the inlet pipe to take some of the stress of the weld joint between the pipe and muffler. He said it is such an obvious design problem that the MB engineers should have made the design changes right at the beginning.
