I also see the LED in the door handle, flashing for almost 10 sec, which the manual describe it will do when one of the doors or trunk is not all closed – but they are…

Any idea what is wrong…?

Maybe there is something I don’t know yet about the locking mechanism. According to the repairman who installed a immobilizer in the car, there isn’t an alarm in it… so, can anyone tell me what the red flashing light is in the console when the car has been locked.
My bet is that the flashing LED is nothing more than someone's attempt to give the impression that there is an alarm in the car and it is armed. I have a '92 500 SL. I do not have an alarm in the car although someone tried to put one in. That caused electrical problems with the horn and cruise control, I am still trying to deal with.

My red LEDs will flash when I am forced to lock the car manually. Perhaps there is an open signal from one of the doors or the trunk even though they appear (and probably are) fully closed.

Last, the sunlight is going to affect the operation of the IRs. A car that old will have scratches in the lenses that will affect the IR signature reception.

Good luck and happy motoring. I love my car regardless of it's odd behavior at times!!
