One of the earliest symptoms would probably be increasing smoke. Harder cold starts. Irregular idle. Less acceleration. Maybe injector noise (nailing). I would think that you are probably at a better chance of not ruining the engine in the long run if you usually drive good distances. If the car gets a chance to really warm up. From 25 miles up, and not stop and go, but long drives on the highway.
