if the other fan wasn't working.... the high pressure probably forced the compressor to shut down...
i just had this issue in my single fan system.... the a/c worked fine until the temps rose... the fan didn't come on... so the compressor shut down..
my fan was just stuck and blew a fuse...
could be a completely different issue...but it shows you there are a lot of ways that the a/c won't work besides the dreaded evaporator issue.
