As DOC said, the fix was to pull the bulb from the instrument cluster socket. I suppose an alternative would be to put black electrical tape over the sensor light window on the right side of the cluster.

That system, using the odometer to trip a switch, was used through 1986. The W201 service manual would have indicated that.

I believe that the 1987 and newer models went to the reset light via the relay located under the front passenger seat carpet.
