Yes, the trap
oxidizer (which had to be replaced every so often) was recalled and replaced with a trap
catalyst, which my car has, and which is permanent. M-B confirmed from my VIN that the recall has been performed.
You may be thinking of the '87 300D W124 cars with the 603 engine, which were recalled to have the trap cat removed and replaced by a straight pipe, plus a catalyst downstream of the turbo. Had that done last winter (got a complete new exhaust system out of it, plus they said the turbo was damaged so they replaced it also, for free) and wish such a thing could be done with the earlier engines. Much nicer and cleaner but it still has the EGR valve, just easier to get at and remove.
