Not much in Dusseldorf nor Essen to do I'm afraid, except maybe shopping in Dusseldorf. Essen is even pretty dreadful...

Nearby Cologne is one of the cultural centres of Germany, and the Dom cathedral is well worth a visit:

When in Cologne, try the local 'Kolsch' pilsener served in these really funny tiny glasses. A well known 'brauhaus' in Cologne: Zum Paffgen, Heumarkt 62 (serve typical German food aswell). Also, do the cable car ride across the Rhein river aswell, starts near the zoo, and the 'hop-on-hop-off' double-decker bustour to see the city's highlights in 90 minutes.

If you're in the mood, there's a big American war cemetary (8,000 graves) just across the nearby border in The Netherlands>

Go see a car museum if you have a day to spare >>

The new Mercedes museum is really a MUST (designed by HG Merz)
Take the highspeed ICE train, takes just 2,5 hours to Stuttgart from Dusseldorf (reservations aren't cheap)

Berlin is the place to be these days, but maybe too far away.

Tschuss und viel Spass,
V.
