722.3xx Torque Converter

I'm getting ready to have the dealer rebuild my 722.3xx transmission due to a leak and the reverse finally going out. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be any problem with it (no noises or slipping, other than slipping in reverse). It shifts fine in all the forward gears. Presuming the pan is clean when they pull it, would it really be necessary to replace the torque converter at the same time? Is there a way to flush the torque converter or clean it out once the transmission is off the car? Thanks.
