I have no knowledge of your car and the situation makes no sense, but it is what it is I suppose.

Suggest you start going through your SAE collection(fractional sizes) and see what works.

To Manny's point - line wrench - term used by techs - formal name is flare nut wrench. Sears has a good set for a reasonable price. Some of the McParts type auto parts store carry them in sets as well. I'd buy a metric set of course. The fittings that require flare nut/line wrenches are odd and this may be why you encountered the situation you have.
