"When the valves get tight, they don't open long enough" That's ridiculous. When valves are tight, they actuall stay open longer but its infintesimal.

When valves are tight they don't close all the way and leak causing loss of compression which causes lower temperature on the compression stroke. Thus making it harder to start a cold engine.
