Could be the wheel lug bolts. I have seen them loosen up just enough to allow the wheel to slip on the hub and cause a knocking (thump, thump, thump) that increases/decreases according to speed.

Fix is to jack up the car and pull the lugs and use the wheel centering tool to reset the position and torque the bolts accrding to factory spec.
