The engine number is right there on the VMI (Vehicle Master Inquiry)

They have them for all the Euro cars. Might be harder or impossible go get a VMI for euros, keep checking the benzworld thread about that


Engine number is also provided on the factory build sheet, as I said, you can write to Stuttgart and ask for your (free) copy of it from the Mercedes Benz historical archives



Your car left the factory with whatever smog equipment was needed to sell them new in Germany. It did not need a catalytic converter in 1983.


The registered importer in California whose name is on the door sticker on your car would have had to have put a new catalytic on the car before it could have been smogged and licensed in California. Obviously, this was done with your car.

Not to mention, other smog equipment like EGR and whatever else the EPA demanded then.

Give the bird some quality time, they need it. They especially like to fly around in the house sometimes, they like the freedom. I kind of like the idea of one of them around here, and sometimes feel a little tempted.
