To answer my own questions.
The part has been updated, new part number is 124 464 02 28. The changes to the part appear to be a different backing plate (plastic) which seals the rings from making contact with anything from the inside. The old plate has several exposed tabs from the individual rings.
Also, yes the wires are part of the unit. Plus another update has a yellow connector on the air bag lead rather than a red connector.
New slip ring unit being installed on the wheel tonight.
