Seems like you might have two separate issues, but I could be wrong about that.
The rush of warm air might be a failed mono valve. When mine failed (diaphragm tore), it defaulted to full heat.
Blower motor might be simply tired or worn out. On my '82, I pulled mine and rehabbed it a few times before finally replacing it.
A multimeter set to DC volts will help you diagnose the blower problem in short order.
I can't remember now how I diagnosed the monovalve. I'm sure I read about it here, though!
