I noticed on my 83 300sd that I am able to remove the key without putting the car in Park. I don't think this is normal, but how do i correct this issue? My car started rolling backwards while I was getting out of the car since i neglected to put the car in Park before I got out.

Is there some sort of locking mechanism on the transmission or ignition to stop the removal of the key? I am new to these cars and would appreciate anyone who can help point me in the correct direction for diagnosing and correcting this issue.
