I can mash on the pedal and it never does kick down until I pull the shifter down a notch, been that way since I've had the car.
My first Mercedes was a W123 (300CD)
The kick down feature didn't work either. One day while the car was raised I found a loose wire tucked almost out of sight near the rear of the tranny. Once I found where to plug it in, I realized I had kickdown!!
Could this be your problem too?
