The "case" will never be closed, opinions will be as varied as the snowflakes... my father is convinced the only time to change a rotor is when it warps. he thinks so little of brakes, that the pads need to be changed when the pads grind steel to steel, and the "grooves" that occur from the pad rivits grinding into them, gives them MORE surface area, so better stopping power... he may be technically correct, but smooth rotors and fresh pads are designed that way for a reason... if "grooved" rotors were better, then race cars wouldn't drill holes and cut slots... grooves hold heat, and compressed gas, plus they weaken the rotor and cut down on heat transferr ability... a slight increase of surface area will not make up for that.
