Definitely a rite of passage! I managed to cut mine short and had to do the exact same thing.

Fortunately for me, the 240D was already manual so I didn't have to cut any wires for everything to work. The best advice I can give is to just look at the wiring diagrams and a manual 240D and use your common sense to wire it up.

HERE is the wiring diagram for a 1980 240D if that helps.
