As for oil, synthetics are better than minerals but you do run the risk of discovering that some of the engine seals are past their best.

If you're planning on keeping it then I'd say use the synthetic but replace the seals. If its just a 'run it until dead' engine then it seems to have done well so far on whatever oil you've been using
