They DO have a very slight angle cut, almost microscopic (see above).

This was a design revision, among others, that resulted in better mileage, performance and less emissions. Bosch did away with the SD240 pilot hole some time ago as well.

The purpose, I'm told by a few 'ye olde timers ' was to inject a minute amount of fuel to start the burn just before the main injection. This made the diesel cycle quieter. The new designs are an improvement on that idea. The result is a surprisingly smooth and quiet engine.

HERE IS YET ANOTHER tidbit of information listed in the German manuals and catalogs but NOT in the English ones. I have seen in two sources {paraphrase} "The following; SD 261 and 265 are recommended for retrofit where SD 240 is specified."
