Well I hate the idea of income tax period, but if they are going to do it, it should at least be a flat tax.

I think a consumption tax would hurt for the short term but help long term. The problem is that most people don't realize that the government gets about half of what they make in taxes. So a 20% consumption tax would kill spending and the economy for the short term.
