The main thing is to not bugger the pulling of the pins that hold the slide rails in the head. There is a clever little tool that works a lot better than a slide puller. Like this:

Where most people have gotten into trouble is trying to pull the pins out with a non-hardened bolt and an assortment of washers. The bolt breaks off in the pin and then you have a much more difficult job to do.
