please help, stranded at k-mart with fan belt/alternator issue...

			Hi,
 1985 300TD...

Can anyone tell me if a faulty alternator might heat up, causing the fan belt to burn ? Cause my fan belt burned up last night, I just replaced it and some rubber started burning upon starting up the car again... I quickly shut it off and felt around, the most heat seemed to be located at the front of the alternator itself...the belt looks ok, I couldn't see any obvious friction potential ...

I am stranded in a k-mart plaza, there is a car parts place, hopefully they have an alternator for me if need be...

any thoughts most welcome, thank you,
