You can scrub the outside surfaces all you want, but it will make no difference. To get good contact, you need shiny metal contacting shiny metal -- the outsides of the posts on the battery and the insides of the clamps on the cables. There's an inexpensive, special tool that makes cleaning these fast and easy.

Coke? That's a new one on me. Have you actually had it work?
