I was in an ‘02 G500 2 days ago and as owner of a ’00 ML, I can say without reservation that the G has much nicer fit and finish, is more rugged on the underside. It is akin to comparing an E class with an S class. I love the way the doors close on the G. Reminded me or a gun safe. Yes indeed, that extra $35K does get you something substantial.
On the ML, most of the wrinkles were worked out in MY ’00. They are not perfect, but pretty darned good. I’ve heard reports that the G isn’t perfect either. I guess the more one spends the more some minor problems stand out.
Talk with a dealer about an extended trial period. When I last shopped for cars, I was able to borrow 2 vehicles, each for a week of testing.
I would also suggest that next time around, or even if you keep your ’99 that you look into an extended warranty. They are a nominal up front cost that is absolutely guaranteed to pay for itself; perhaps many times over.
Happy hunting!
