No its not that far fetched. My theory on this is as follows. Someone screws up so a crazy expensive satellite is falling to earth. Chances of it doing damage by hitting something is .000001%. So since the Chinese just knocked one out of the sky this is a good time to do the same and at least get something out of this super expensive flop. They can sell the danger of rocket fuel or parts killing people as a reason to do it.
Most likely the message is to China; "don't get to cocky, were still ahead".
Thats my take on it.
