While we may be smart enough to know that hybrids are generally dumb, your average person is ignorant and simply wants "A hybrid" to show off and brag about. If lexus sells a hybrid flagship car, MB will have to do the same, else lose a bunch of potential sales. It may not be engineering-logical....but its fiscally and please-the-people logical. The hybrid stuff also lets them eek a little extra fuel economy out of a really powerful car while at the same time having lots of off the line power and good in the city mileage when that 5.5 V8 would just be idling away all of your fuel and $$ anyways. However, the system must be equally or more reliable than the engine-only setup, or else its dumb and pointless.
