Nice write up. I'm about to do this on my 560SL and plan to take the whole pump/filter unit off the car and move to the work bench to replace all the copper sealing washers, hose clamps, filter, etc. I also want to see if the rubber hoses are old and brittle. If they are, I'm going to replace them too.

Here's a tip I got about priming the system before firing it up - cycle the pump twice before cranking the engine. That is, key
on (key position 2, listen for pump to cycle), key off, key on (listen for
pump again), key off, now crank to start engine. Makes it a little easier
on cranking system. Also gives you an early heads up if there's a fuel
leak.
