That may be the answer. I think that the part to be re-threaded should be turned down in a lathe though. I'm not sure if the inner diameter of the 10mm threads is larger than the outer diameter of the threads of the 8mm. I'm afraid the only other option will be a custom machined part. The longest 8 to 10MM step studs I have been able to find are approx 1.5" long
