You are referring to what is commonly called a Hassock style fan. I have 7-10 of them, and one is the wife's fan of choice for sleeping noise.
I don't have a pic on this computer of a larger one like you speak of, but here are a couple of smaller ones on that style.

see the removable ashtray in the one above?

Man, they had to smoke in the 30's and 40's.....
