Yeah, they went to planets that had a Western theme, 1920s mobster theme, 1960s theme (of course).

I seem to remember Kirk explaining how it was all possible in one of his logs. Something like "John Smith's theory of parallel planetary development".

Then it was TNG that proposed that ancient beings dispersed their DNA into the primordial soup of all these planets, explaining again the similar development of the Star Trek universe.

Of course, the universal translator is the end all be all. Somehow it instantaneously translates the alien language into English, but makes it seem like they're speaking it out of their own mouths.

I've noticed a large number of Star Trek fans on this Forum. Could there be a correlation between Sci Fi and old benzes?
