It's impossible to install the camshaft backwards...........

Take a look at the camshaft itself and attempt to determine if it's sitting forward of the desired position in the bearings. The cam usually moves rearward.........by itself.........until the thrust washer stops the movement.

However, if something has hung the camshaft and is preventing it from moving to the desired position.........that's your issue.
